The 1,000 Books program helps parents and caregivers develop early literacy skills in their children and build a solid learning foundation before they start school. It encourages parents and children to integrate reading and the public library into their everyday lives.  The program is open to all babies, toddlers and preschoolers who have not yet entered kindergarten/5k.

You can read 1,000 books with just one story each night for three years, ten books a week for two years, or twenty books a week for one year (just three books a day!).

Stop by the library to register your child and receive a reading log to keep track of the books shared together. After reading and recording 100 books, bring in the reading log so your child can receive a Slinger Community Library canvas book bag. When participants reach 500 books, the child and parent will receive a book of their choice to keep. After reading 1,000 books and completing the program, participants will receive an invitation to a graduation party, a certificate of achievement, and a book of their choice. They will also have their picture taken for the Library’s “1,000 Books” wall of fame.

You can record every book you read with your child, and each time you reread a book you can count it again. We hope you’ll join us in promoting early literacy skills!
